Let’s be honest and ask how this redevelopment will benefit households and local businesses in disadvantaged areas of the city. Downtown/Inner Harbor is where some developers feel they should make a profit-certainly they could benefit from significant support from city government. Why not? Because they do little or nothing to help the “other city of Baltimore” that families and the neighborhood economies they live in struggle with every day. Neither will Port Covington, nor will the Casino and other downtown development. Why is it suitable as a topic for a Sent Point article? For two reasons.įirst, redevelopment of the Inner Harbor will not significantly contribute to the preservation of Baltimore City. Total cost, $500 million in private money, plus $400 million in public infrastructure funding.Īt first glance, this seems like a good thing, long overdue. Redevelopment includes new retail, commercial, residential and outdoor construction. The retail tourist attraction, as seen in the city as a whole, has fallen on hard times despite its proximity to the Horseshoe Casino, Topgolf and other entertainment area attractions. As you may have read or seen on the local news, there is plan on the table – championed and endorsed by Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott – to redevelop downtown’s flagship Harborplace.
